Financed by: Regional level: Wallonia Region – DGO6 - technical support agreement

Brief project summary:

The principal objective of the CYTOFOOD project is to make basic and rapid multi-detection tools available to the agrofood sector to check for contaminants. To do this, the project uses an immunological technique of multi-compound detections, based on the use of microspheres and their characterisation by flow cytometry. Using this technique, a large number of substances can be detected from a low sample volume.

Current developments are enabling us to envisage the possibility of the company being able to perform analyses itself using a portable device that represents a reasonable investment.

The outcome of the project will be that the businesses being targeted in the agrofood sector will have at their disposal, via the centres involved in CYTOFOOD, the necessary expertise to adapt specific tests for each sphere of activity. All the reagents the companies need to perform their analyses will be accessible via the two partner research centres.

If the company does not want to invest in a cytometer, it will be always be possible to perform the analyses via a laboratory that does have the technical equipment.

Role of the CER: The role of the CER is to

  • Develop antibodies to the compounds of interest (allergens and chemical substances)
  • Characterise these antibodies
  • Develop multi-compound detection tests by flow cytometry
  • Transfer the detection kits on site
